Creating a lasting impact through community service can start by looking right outside your front door. At the 2026 MEDLIFE Chapter Awards, German Morales, a standout leader from the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) MEDLIFE Chapter, spoke to us about his chapter winning the Local Service Award for creating impactful homeless outreach programs. German’s leadership demonstrates how local service, combined with lessons learned on global Service Learning Trips, can transform a student chapter into a powerful force for change in its own city.
Here is how UNR MEDLIFE identified their city’s most pressing needs, mobilized student volunteers, and distributed over a thousand meals in a single semester.

1. Targeting the Community’s Greatest Need
When deciding where to focus their volunteer efforts, UNR MEDLIFE didn’t look far. Homelessness remains one of the most visible and urgent challenges in the Reno area.
Rather than spreading their resources thin across dozens of unrelated initiatives, the UNR chapter decided to narrow their focus to directly support the unhoused community. By launching dedicated homeless outreach programs, the chapter ensured their efforts yielded direct, measurable results where help was needed most.
2. Hands-On Volunteerism in Action
To address food insecurity among Reno’s unhoused population, the chapter established a consistent weekend service routine:
- Food Distribution & Dining Halls: Volunteers regularly spent their weekends working alongside local food pantries and soup kitchens, preparing and distributing meals to community members.
- Consistent Scheduling: By organizing recurring weekend shifts, the chapter made it easy for busy pre-health and undergraduate students to participate in meaningful volunteer work in Reno.
- Broadening Community Outreach: While food security was their core pillar, the chapter also explored other creative community service ideas by supporting animal shelters and wildlife sanctuaries during special weekend service events.
3. Measurable Impact: Over 1,000 Meals Distributed
In just one semester, UNR MEDLIFE achieved an extraordinary milestone: distributing over 1,000 meals through their weekly homeless outreach programs.
For the student volunteers, handing out a warm meal offered something a textbook never could: a direct, human connection to the local community. Seeing immediate relief on the faces of community members made the hours spent volunteering deeply rewarding and reinforced the true purpose of service work.
4. Translating Global Lessons to Local Service
German’s perspective on community service deepened significantly after participating in a MEDLIFE Service Learning Trip abroad.
During the SLT, German observed how community health issues are often tied to unexpected structural and environmental factors, such as how harsh topography or a lack of paved staircases can prevent families from accessing basic healthcare.
While the physical challenges in Nevada are different from those in rural South America, the experience inspired German to rethink local service altogether. Going forward, the UNR chapter aims to look beyond basic relief and find innovative, structural ways to identify and address systemic issues within the Reno community.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Student Leaders
German Morales and the UNR MEDLIFE Chapter prove that passionate student leadership can drive meaningful change right at home. By combining consistent local action with a broader global perspective, they set a high benchmark for chapter excellence and achievement.
