Leadership Tips For Students: How MAST Academy Raised $8,000 in 3 Hours & Won MEDLIFE Chapter of the Year

Leading a student organization requires dedication, clear communication, and strategic planning. When done right, student-led groups can achieve extraordinary reach and impact. Recently, MAST Academy was awarded the MEDLIFE Chapter of the Year after recruiting 18 students for summer Service Learning Trips and running a massive fundraising campaign. Chapter President Mia Sofia shared her top leadership tips for students and how her team stayed motivated, built structure, and transformed their goals into success.

1. Build Consistency and Enforce Accountability

Great leaders know that long-term momentum relies on routine and expectations. For MAST Academy, staying consistent started at the executive level. The chapter held monthly general meetings alongside biweekly E-board sessions with their moderator, Stephanie, and chapter mentor, Lorena.

However, consistency only works if members show up. Mia Sofia took a firm yet transparent approach to chapter attendance:

“I was very strict on attendance. So if you didn’t attend and you weren’t marked as present, you would get a warning from The President personally.”

By setting high standards early on, the chapter cultivated a reliable member base that was ready to take action when big initiatives launched.

2. plan High-Impact Fundraising Initiatives

One of the biggest hurdles student MEDLIFE chapters face is financing their volunteer trips and community development projects. Finding creative fundraising ideas for students can make all the difference in keeping trip costs accessible.

MAST Academy proved this by hosting a power hour fundraising blitz in March. This was a focused, high-energy event where members reached out to friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, anyone in their immediate network, simultaneously.

“What made the biggest difference for my chapter was definitely the Power Hour we had in March where we raised over $8,000 in three hours.”

By rallying the entire chapter around a fast-paced, collective goal, MAST Academy generated life-changing support for MEDLIFE’s partner communities while also funding student SLT donation goals all in a single afternoon.

3. Keep It Fun and Competitive

When sharing her biggest leadership tips for students, Mia Sofia emphasized that enforcing rules isn’t enough, you have to make the experience engaging so members truly want to participate.

To build an active chapter:

  • Connect to the Cause: Ensure every member understands MEDLIFE’s core mission of sustainable healthcare and infrastructure.

  • Add Friendly Competition: Use gamification, chapter leaderboards, prizes, or team targets during fundraisers and recruitment drives to boost excitement and incentive to participate.

  • Focus on Community: Blend formal business meetings with interactive activities and ice breakers that encourage members to bond.

Take the First Step Today!

Taking on a chapter presidency or leadership role can feel overwhelming at first, but true progress comes from taking action little by little. As Mia Sofia advises prospective student leaders: “Just do it. Make everyone as involved as you can… make it fun, make it competitive so people actually want to do it. But most importantly, just do it. Everything is going to work out.”

Applying Mia Sofia’s leadership tips for students can help your campus chapter raise more funds, recruit more volunteers, and maximize your impact in global health equity. To learn how you can join or start a MEDLIFE chapter at your school, fill out the interest form below!
