A lot of people who are passionate about assisting the unhoused are curious about how they can help build homes for the homeless. Last week, our team had the privilege of handing over a new home to a family in Tena, Ecuador, who had been living in the shadows of uncertainty after a devastating fire destroyed their previous home. This family of five is now beginning a new chapter in a safe, secure environment, and it’s a reminder of the impact that community support and collaboration can have on transforming lives.
A Tragic Loss and a Desperate Situation
The family’s ordeal began with a tragic fire that destroyed their house and turned their lives upside down. With no electricity in the home, they relied on candles for light. One fateful evening, as one of their children worked on homework, a candle was knocked over, igniting the flames that rapidly consumed the home. In the midst of the chaos, the mother suffered severe burns as she tried to rescue her children from upstairs. She was hospitalized for 15 days, and the family lost everything, with only the clothes on their backs left to their name.
The Process of Rebuilding
This devastating incident left the family in a vulnerable and uncertain situation. But with the support of the community and the commitment of our team, we were able to offer them a fresh start. Our initiatives aim to provide help for low-income families through rebuilding lives, not just homes. Throughout the rebuilding process, this family received much more than just four walls and a roof, they received a sense of security and hope for the future.
The father of the family expressed his gratitude, saying, “In the fire, almost everything we had burned down. Our little house caught fire, and we were left with practically nothing—only with what we were wearing that night. The most affected was my wife. She spent 15 days in the hospital after burning her feet also part of her arm. For me, it’s a miracle, and I feel very happy because I am going to have a place to stay with my children, together.” His words reflect the deep sense of relief that the new home has brought them, a place to heal, rebuild, and move forward with hope.
This family’s story is a testament to the importance of building homes for the homeless and the long-lasting impact that such projects can have on families who are suffering from loss and hardship. The new home provides them not just with shelter, but with the chance to create new memories, pursue dreams, and focus on a future full of potential.
