In one of our partner communities in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, a transformation is underway. Aside from medicine, MEDLIFE is also committed to renovating schools to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment for the children of our partner communities.
The latest school project in Tamarindo is not just about making a school look nicer; it’s about creating spaces where education can flourish. With the support of our dedicated volunteers and local staff, the completion of this project will ensure that students no longer have to learn in conditions that are less than ideal.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this project is seeing the students getting to be actively involved in their learning environment. Education and support go hand-in-hand, and in Tamarindo, this is exemplified by the children preparing a special theater performance. This showcase is not just a performance but a testament to the creativity, talent, and resilience of the students and teachers. Through music, drama, and other artistic expressions, the children have been able to learn and grow in unexpected ways. Their participation in the arts highlights the importance of fostering creativity alongside academic education.
However, beyond the spotlight of the stage, there is an even bigger transformation happening. The classrooms at the local school, where these talented students spend most of their days, are undergoing much-needed renovations.
Currently, some students are forced to attend classes outside, where the environment is not ideal for focused learning. Without proper walls and structural integrity, these students are at a disadvantage in terms of concentration and access to quality education.
Our efforts surrounding education support often result in school renovation projects as it plays a critical role in leveling the playing field for these children. By improving the physical learning environment, we aim to ensure that students have the space, security, and comfort they need to focus on their education. Through each school renovation project, we are rebuilding classrooms that will help these children thrive, offering a safe and nurturing space for them to grow academically and emotionally.
Aida, a teacher working with the children, expressed the importance of safe classrooms:
“I’ve been working with children for almost four years now and here we help them with reinforcement in various subjects, based on what we know or can research as volunteers. For example, we support them with mathematics, Spanish, English, Arts, and music. For me, music is very important to teach the children.”
However, Aida also shared the challenges they face:
“There is a lot of insecurity here. You can already see the outside, we do not have walls. We’ve had two robbery attempts in the past. If it weren’t for our puppies, they would have taken almost everything from us. But thank God they intervened. We want the classrooms for their learning. Learning is not the same outside in front of the walls or without walls. Learning is not the same here as in a secure environment. Those are the most important things.”
The renovation project in Tamarindo is part of a long-term initiative that will provide the community with improved infrastructure. This project will not only benefit the current students but will serve generations to come, creating a culture of learning and growth. When children feel safe and supported in their educational environment, they are more likely to succeed and contribute positively to society.
As part of this effort, MEDLIFE volunteers will engage directly with the children through interactive educational workshops. Volunteers from various universities, including University of Pittsburgh, NC State, and University of Cental Florida, will participate in the project by helping with school renovations and providing education support to students. These workshops will mix together both learning and fun, making the experience interesting and impactful for both the students and volunteers.
Renovating schools is just one example of how MEDLIFE is working to improve education in underserved communities. Through projects like this, we’re creating the foundations for future generations to succeed and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to receive quality education in a safe, supported environment.
