At MEDLIFE, we are committed to providing comprehensive support to patients in underserved communities, ensuring they receive the medical care they need. One such patient is Mrs. Maria, a 64-year-old woman from the Vaqueria community in the Canton of Colta, Chimborazo Province, Ecuador, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023. Her journey with us is a testament to the importance of patient follow-up and the continuous care required for individuals fighting cancer.
How Maria’s Story Began
Maria’s health condition became known to us through referrals from those familiar with the work that MEDLIFE does in supporting people in need of medical care. We first met Maria on June 23, 2025, during a visit to her home, where she shared her ongoing health struggles. Despite having received initial medical care and tests, Maria had faced challenges in continuing her treatment. In fact, after her diagnosis, she was referred to a specialized hospital in Quito for further treatment but was unable to attend the necessary follow-up appointments. It was clear that Maria needed ongoing support, which led her being enrolled in our patient follow-up care program.
Medical Assistance and Ongoing Support
We were able to quickly secure a medical appointment for Maria at the Lizarzaburu Health Subcenter, where she received a thorough evaluation. The doctor confirmed her breast cancer diagnosis and emphasized the urgency of continuing her treatment. Unfortunately, due to the lack of resources and support, Maria had missed out on several crucial medical appointments. With MEDLIFE’s help, we coordinated all the necessary paperwork, and Maria was enrolled in our follow-up program.
The first step was to conduct a series of tests, including blood, stool, and urine tests, as well as a Pap smear. These tests were scheduled for July 14, 2025. After receiving the test results, the doctor provided a transfer document to facilitate Maria’s access to oncology services at the Social Security Hospital in Riobamba.
The Path to Cancer Treatment
After multiple visits to social services, Maria was referred for additional examinations. We assisted Maria and her family in obtaining the required documentation for a bone scintigraphy, a test necessary for her cancer treatment. As part of her treatment process, we also worked on obtaining Maria’s medical history from Solca Hospital in Quito, an oncology center specializing in cancer treatment.
Through continued support and constant follow-ups, we helped Maria overcome barriers to accessing the treatment she desperately needed. After undergoing tests such as tomography for the head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis, we are awaiting results to assess her current condition. The medical team will then determine the next steps in her treatment plan.
The Power of Follow-Up Care
Maria’s case highlights the importance of follow-up care for cancer patients. Without the continuous support that MEDLIFE provides, Maria would have faced further delays in her treatment, potentially compromising her health and well-being. By offering ongoing assistance and actively working to ensure that patients attend their medical appointments and receive timely treatments, we aim to make a tangible difference in their lives.
