In November 2024, we learned of Ariana’s story, a young girl from Tena, Ecuador, who had been suffering from an uncommon and severe condition in her arm. Her mother had brought her to one of our clinics, concerned about the swelling and persistent pain Ariana was experiencing. Upon examination, our doctors discovered a rare condition that would require significant medical attention and long-term care. This is the story of how MEDLIFE’s follow-up care program provided the comprehensive care Ariana needed to overcome her medical challenges.
The Diagnosis: A Rare Condition
Ariana lives in a rural Indigenous community where access to specialists is very limited. In these areas, healthcare services are often scarce or out of reach, and serious conditions like Ariana’s can go undiagnosed for longer periods of time. After our medical team examined her, we discovered that Ariana had an arteriovenous fistula, which was complicating a lymphatic malformation in her right upper limb. The malformation, which is a rare and complex issue involving the lymphatic system, caused dangerous symptoms, such as swelling, bleeding, fatigue, and even fainting. In severe cases, this condition can lead to difficulty breathing, and the arteriovenous fistula only increased these health risks.
Coordinating care
Treating Ariana’s condition required a multidisciplinary approach. She was enrolled in long-term pediatric care, meaning we coordinated a series of tests, including oncology tests, cardiovascular evaluations, and imaging to better understand the full scope of her condition. A tomography revealed the full extent of her malformation, and it was clear that high-risk surgery would be needed. The procedure, however, was costly, amounting to nearly $10,000, a significant burden for Ariana’s family, especially given the remote location and limited financial resources.
Fundraising and Support
Despite these challenges, the MEDLIFE network rallied together to support Ariana and her family. With the combined efforts of volunteers, donors, and our community partners, we were able to raise the necessary funds for her surgery. Our dedicated team worked tirelessly for months, coordinating every step of the process to ensure Ariana received the treatment she desperately needed.
Surgery and Recovery
In August 2025, Ariana finally underwent the surgery to treat her lymphatic malformation. The procedure was successful, and she is now in recovery. Ariana is well on her way to regaining her strength, and the bright future that seemed so uncertain now feels more promising for this young patient. Her resilience, coupled with the support of her family and community, has given her the opportunity to live a healthier life from this point forward.
