Olga, a 64-year-old patient from Tena, Ecuador, is one example of how our follow-up care program is uplifting patients to receive life-changing treatment. Olga was diagnosed with a Baker’s cyst, a benign tumor caused by the leakage of synovial fluid behind the knee. Through dedicated follow-up, Olga has received Baker’s cyst treatment, empowering her to improve her health and quality of life.
Baker’s Cyst Treatment: The Beginning of Olga’s Journey
Olga first presented with a persistent issue in her knee, leading to a diagnosis of a Baker’s cyst. The cyst had been causing discomfort and swelling, and her initial visits to the orthopedic doctor provided a diagnosis and a treatment plan. However, her journey wasn’t complete until MEDLIFE’s follow-up care team stepped in to offer ongoing medical support. Through a series of appointments, tests, and personalized care, Olga received the treatment she needed to improve her health.
During her initial consultation with the orthopedic doctor, Olga was informed that the Baker’s cyst had formed due to the leakage of synovial fluid in the knee, often caused by muscle movement. Fortunately, the cyst was benign, but it required medical intervention to prevent further complications. The orthopedic doctor suggested a procedure known as ultrasound-guided drainage, in which the accumulated fluid behind her knee would be removed to alleviate her symptoms.
Ongoing Treatment and Patient-Centered Care
On August 13, 2025, Olga received her ultrasound-guided drainage procedure, which successfully removed the synovial fluid. The fluid was sent to the pathology lab for analysis to ensure there were no signs of infection or malignancy. This step was crucial in confirming that Olga’s condition was not worsening and that the cyst remained benign. The procedure was a success, and Olga’s pain was significantly reduced. She was able to experience immediate relief and was instructed to return for a follow-up consultation with the orthopedic doctor after 30 days.
Supporting Olga’s Continued Care
In addition to the immediate medical care, MEDLIFE has ensured that Olga receives consistent support through the follow-up care program. During a follow-up consultation in September, it became evident that the cyst, while reduced in size, had begun to grow again. The orthopedic doctor advised that the cyst could be drained multiple times, but it would eventually need surgical removal for a permanent solution.
After discussing her options with the doctor, Olga decided to pursue surgery, though financial barriers were a concern. Through MEDLIFE’s patient follow-up care program, we are working closely with Olga to ensure she receives the treatment she needs. Social work support is available to help with the cost of surgery, and we are committed to providing comprehensive assistance to Olga throughout her treatment journey.
Olga’s journey highlights the power of patient-centered care and the difference it makes when healthcare extends beyond initial diagnoses. Baker’s cyst treatment isn’t just about one procedure; it’s about ensuring that patients receive continuous care and support until they have fully recovered.
