Sharing patient stories is an essential part of MEDLIFE’s mission. Every patient tells a story, and each narrative provides insight into their unique healthcare journey. Today, we’re sharing Teresa’s story, a patient who has been receiving ongoing care for a Baker’s cyst, a benign tumor that affects her left knee. Through the dedication of our follow-up care staff, we’re continuing to support Teresa as she navigates her diagnosis and the medical procedures required for her recovery and care.
Diagnosis and Initial Care
Teresa, a 64-year-old woman from the Unión Lojana community in Riobamba, was first diagnosed with a Baker’s cyst in 2023. The tumor, caused by the leakage of synovial fluid due to muscle movement, formed in her knee. Initially, she underwent an ultrasound that confirmed the presence of this benign cyst. The diagnosis was made by an oncological surgeon, who emphasized that the cyst was not cancerous but still required medical intervention.
The doctor explained that to alleviate Teresa’s symptoms, a procedure called ultrasound-guided drainage would be necessary. This method involves removing the accumulated fluid behind the knee. The procedure was scheduled, and the costs and requirements were clarified. Teresa was informed that the procedure could be done but required advance booking.
Treatment and ongoing healthcare
On August 13, 2025, Teresa underwent the ultrasound-guided drainage procedure at Solca Hospital. The fluid extracted from her knee was sent to the pathology lab for analysis to rule out any possible infections or malignant changes. The procedure brought significant relief to Teresa, and she expressed her gratitude for the support provided by MEDLIFE.
After the procedure, Teresa had a follow-up appointment with the orthopedic specialist, where the doctor reviewed the results and observed the improvement in her condition. However, after some time, the cyst began to grow again, causing renewed discomfort. The doctor explained that while the fluid could be drained multiple times, it would continue to regenerate. As a result, the best course of action would be to surgically remove the sac of synovial fluid.
Financial Support and Surgical Considerations
At this point, the doctor recommended surgery as the most effective solution to address the recurring cyst. The surgery, which would involve local anesthesia, was estimated to cost $1,000, a significant amount for Teresa to cover on her own, given her limited financial resources. The patient was given a prescription to manage her discomfort until she could decide whether to proceed with the surgery.
Despite the ongoing challenges, Teresa expressed her desire to undergo the surgery, recognizing that it would offer a permanent solution to her condition. Teresa plans to speak with her family about how to cover the costs of this procedure, while MEDLIFE is looking into if funds from the Moving Mountains campaign can be used to contribute as well.
