In the Amazonian city of Tena, Ecuador, MEDLIFE’s patient follow-up program recently changed a young boy’s life for the better. Two-year-old Gael lives with several complex health challenges, including cerebral palsy and congenital blindness. For his mother, the daily struggle to transport him to medical appointments was overwhelming, until our staff stepped in to provide access to essential pediatric medical care and support that would transform their journey toward ease in caring for Gael’s medical conditions.

A Family’s Daily Struggle

Gael and his mother live in Huayrayacu, a small community outside of Tena. From an early age, it was clear that Gael’s development was different from other children. After multiple hospital visits, doctors diagnosed him with cerebral palsy, congenital hypotonia, microcephaly, and developmental delay. These conditions left him unable to walk, speak, or see clearly. His mother, devoted but exhausted, carried him long distances to his appointments, often to hospitals in the city. Without specialized mobility support, even attending regular checkups became an uphill battle.

When the MEDLIFE staff met Gael at the MC87-TENA-2025 Clinic, they saw an opportunity to help. After reviewing his diagnosis and medical records, the team decided to deliver a postural wheelchair, customized to his needs. For the first time, Gael could sit comfortably and safely, while his mother could move him easily to hospitals for therapy and evaluations. “Everything will be easier from now on,” she said with a smile through tears of gratitude.

Continued Access to Pediatric Medical Care

But MEDLIFE’s involvement didn’t stop there. During a follow-up consultation, doctors discovered that Gael was also living with binocular blindness. This new development made access to pediatric medical care even more crucial. MEDLIFE arranged for an urgent appointment with an ophthalmologist at Metrofraternidad Hospital in Quito, ensuring Gael received the specialized care he needed.

In Quito, a pediatric neurologist examined Gael again and confirmed multiple diagnoses, cerebral palsy, microcephaly, congenital blindness, and developmental delays. His mother reported that Gael was experiencing frequent seizures, muscle spasms, and signs of neurological distress. The doctor immediately ordered advanced tests: bloodwork, a brain MRI, and a 24-hour video EEG to better understand his condition and guide future cerebral palsy treatments.
