At just 13 years old, Vivian’s life has already been filled with challenges. Born in Lima and later raised in the Peruvian jungle, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as an infant after suffering severe seizures during a family trip. Her condition has since limited her mobility, requiring constant care and specialized therapies. Unfortunately, like many families in underserved regions, her mother faced immense barriers to accessing consistent cerebral palsy care, from the high costs of therapy to the lack of available medical specialists.

The Struggle for Ongoing Treatment

Vivian’s mother, Llina, has always been her strongest advocate. While determined to support Vivian’s health, she quickly discovered that cerebral palsy care in their region was scarce and costly. The only available therapy sessions were private, each costing around 100 soles, far beyond what Llina could afford while raising three other children on her own.

Despite the financial and emotional hardships, Llina continued to search for options. Vivian began attending a special education school in Juanjui, where she could receive two monthly therapy sessions. But this limited schedule wasn’t enough to meet her needs. The school, like many others serving children with disabilities, lacked sufficient resources to provide frequent physical therapy treatments for cerebral palsy, leaving families to fill in the gaps themselves.

Finding Hope Through MEDLIFE

When Llina heard that a MEDLIFE health campaign would be visiting the community of Ate, near Lima, she saw it as an opportunity for hope. With help from the local school and campaign organizers, Vivian and her mother traveled to the city to seek specialized care.

At the Children’s Medical Center, Vivian met with a neuropediatrician who recommended further evaluation by specialists in traumatology and physical medicine. Through MEDLIFE’s continued follow-up and coordination, Vivian later secured appointments at the San Juan de Dios Clinic in Lima, an important milestone in accessing consistent cerebral palsy care.

The clinic’s doctors confirmed that Vivian required ongoing therapy and diagnostic tests to address ischemia and other complications. After reviewing her family’s case, the clinic agreed to cover 50% of the cost of her examinations and treatment, providing a glimmer of hope for Llina and her daughter.

Vivian’s story is a powerful reminder of why affordable and accessible healthcare is vital for low-income families. Without it, conditions like cerebral palsy go untreated, limiting children’s potential and placing immense emotional and financial burdens on their caregivers.
