How Dental Volunteering Gave Gabriel A New Perspective on the Field

For aspiring dental professionals, dental volunteering can be so much more than just hands-on experience, it can provide a deeper understanding of patient care, global health, and the human side of dentistry. For Gabriel, a Smiles Movement volunteer and recent graduate, this experience became a turning point in how he views his future career.

Through programs like Smiles Movement, MEDLIFE’s dental volunteering subsect, students can participate in meaningful dental clinic volunteer opportunities that allow them to step outside traditional classroom learning and engage directly with patients in underserved communities. Here’s how this experience shaped Gabriel’s perspective about dental care.

A New Perspective on a Familiar Path

Before joining the program, Gabriel had a clear vision of his future:

What’s your dream career?
Gabriel: “So I’ve always wanted to be a dentist, and then I was very privileged to come on this opportunity and come to this mission and see through a new perspective”

This shift in perspective is something many participants describe in their volunteer work testimonials. While the goal of becoming a dentist may remain the same, the understanding of what that role truly means begins to evolve.

Seeing Dentistry Beyond the Clinic

One of the most impactful aspects of dental volunteering is the opportunity to connect with patients who may not otherwise have access to care.

How did this experience change your view of dentistry?
Gabriel: “I think it’s very eye opening. It causes you to just view dentistry more with an open mind. It’s more than just teeth. I think it’s more connecting with the patient, especially those that don’t have access to dental care and have access to the resources that many people are accustomed to.”

This realization highlights an important truth: dentistry is not just about procedures, it’s about people. In underserved communities, where resources are limited, the role of a dental professional becomes even more significant.

The Importance of Access to Care

Gabriel also reflected on how the experience broadened his understanding of who needs care and why it matters:

How did this change your view of dental care?
Gabriel: “You know I came in with an open heart, open mind. I didn’t really expect anything. You know, I came in ready to serve. I think ultimately it just showed that everyone needs dental care, right? It’s not just one age, one group of people. So, I think, just coming in and giving that kind of care to everyone is just incredible and I think it’s something that everyone should hold on to.”

Experiences like this reinforce the importance of expanding access to dental services and understanding the broader impact of oral health on communities.

More Than Just Experience

Participating in dental volunteering is not just about gaining experience for a resume, it’s about developing empathy, cultural awareness, and a deeper commitment to patient care. For people like Gabriel, it becomes a defining moment that shapes how they approach their future careers.

Through Smiles Movement, volunteers don’t just observe dentistry, they engage directly, learn, and grow. And in doing so, they gain a perspective that extends far beyond the clinic and serves them in their future careers in terms of empathy, understanding, and a willingness to serve.
