Community Development Projects: Staircases in Lima, Peru

In June 2024, MEDLIFE visited the community of San Francisco in Lima, Peru, where we met with local leaders to learn about their struggles. Residents shared not only their challenges with unsafe and treacherous paths but also the significant issue of lacking land titles, which restricted their access to essential services. This was the beginning of a new chapter for San Francisco, as we proposed building a staircase that would be the first step toward acquiring land title and, ultimately, improving their future.

Community development projects like this one are vital in addressing the basic needs of marginalized populations, particularly in human settlements where infrastructure is often lacking. For years, the people of San Francisco had to contend with steep, unstable terrain that made even the simplest tasks, such as going to work, attending school, or seeking healthcare, challenging and unsafe. These barriers kept residents from living their every day lives, and the lack of proper infrastructure reinforced their isolation from essential services.

The proposed staircase was meant to serve as more than just a means to improve mobility; it’s a gateway to numerous opportunities for all local residents. By providing safer access, the staircase also plays a crucial role in securing land titles for the entire community. Without a land title, people in San Francisco could not register for vital public services such as healthcare, education, and social support programs. By facilitating the acquisition of land titles, this staircase paves the way for future development, access to better infrastructure, and improved quality of life for all residents.

This community development project represents a significant milestone in the lives of those living in San Francisco. The new staircase not only provides safer and easier access to the community but also symbolizes hope and change. It marks the beginning of long-term progress, allowing for future projects that will further enhance the living conditions and opportunities available to the community. With the creation of safer routes, families will have easier access to healthcare centers, schools, and employment opportunities, all important steps toward building a more resilient and self-sufficient community.

The staircase project in San Francisco is a testament to the impact that thoughtful community development projects can have on improving lives. One project, one promise kept; and this is just the beginning. With continued support, we can continue to unlock even more opportunities for the people of San Francisco, transforming their community one step at a time.
