Parenting is a challenging yet rewarding journey, and the role of a parent is crucial in shaping the future of children. But without the proper tools and knowledge about appropriate, sustainable parenting practices, parents can be left feeling burnt out and kids feeling neglected.
In Amaru, a community nestled in the scenic Pisaq region of Cusco, Peru, MEDLIFE recently held an interactive parenting workshop. Amaru is home to a group of dedicated parents eager to enhance their relationships with their children and create a more nurturing environment at home. This parenting workshop lead by a group of knowledgable and passionate MEDLIFE staff was used as a space for learning and growth for the families involved.

The workshop covered critical topics that can help strengthen families and ensure the protection and growth of children. As part of our ongoing efforts to promote education in underserved communities, we worked together with local parents to address some of the most vital aspects of family dynamics, child development, and responsible parenting. We focused on fostering respect, love, and understanding as the foundation for raising children in a way that values both emotional and physical safety.
Key Topics Covered in the Parenting Workshop:
Raising with Respect and Affection
We encouraged parents to interact with their children by putting kindness, empathy, and understanding at the forefront of everything. This approach aims to build an environment where children feel loved and valued, which ultimately leads to healthier emotional development.
Preventing Violence at Home
One of the main topics was how to prevent violence within families and create peaceful, conflict-free homes. Parents were taught the importance of non-violent communication and how to manage anger and frustration constructively.

Teaching Values by Example
Parents learned that children often adopt behaviors and values from observing their parents. Leading by example through calm, open, and polite communication is one of the most effective ways to instill values such as honesty, kindness, and responsibility.
Talking Openly About Sexuality
We also addressed the importance of open, honest conversations about sexuality. The avoidance of this topic can often signal to children that sexuality is something to be ashamed of, which can lead to them ultimately neglecting their own sexual health when they’re older. In order to avoid things like teen pregnancies and the spread of STIs, parents must educate their children early.

Technology and Social Media
In today’s age, understanding the impact of technology on children is crucial. Parents learned how to guide their children’s use of technology and social media, as well as how to mindfully limit screen time, ensuring their children have ample time in real-world settings to grow and learn.
Quality Time with Children
We emphasized the importance of spending quality time with children. This helps build stronger emotional bonds and allows children to feel more supported and valued.
Understanding Children’s Rights and Parents’ Responsibilities
This topic was vital in helping parents recognize their legal and moral responsibilities in caring for and protecting their children and their rights.

The Value of Free Workshops for Parents
Workshops like the one held in Amaru empower families to break cycles of violence, promote positive parenting practices, and create loving environments where children can thrive emotionally, mentally, and physically. By offering free workshops for parents, MEDLIFE aims to equip parents with the tools they need to build stronger, more harmonious households.
As we continue working in underserved communities, we aim to provide opportunities for growth outside of just medical outreach and infrastructure. We are dedicated to creating a brighter future by ensuring that every parent has the support they need to nurture their children into compassionate, well-rounded individuals. The Parenting Workshop in Amaru is just one example of how we can collectively work towards stronger, healthier communities.
