Helping Elvia Access Vital Women’s Health Services

For many living in underserved or rural areas in Latin America, access to vital women’s health services can make all the difference in ensuring women receive the care they need for a healthier, more secure future. Elvia, a 46-year-old woman from a rural community in Ecuador, recently received medical care at the Solca Riobamba Hospital with the help of MEDLIFE. Her journey is one of many examples of the importance of regular health screenings and the significant impact that timely medical intervention can have on a woman’s well-being.

The Importance of Regular Health Screenings

Elvia’s experience began when she visited a MEDLIFE mobile clinic for a routine Pap smear. The results showed an abnormal finding, a Low-Grade Intraepithelial Lesion (LIE), which is a precursor to cervical cancer. LIEs can be caused by HPV in women, a virus that is often undetected without screenings like the Pap test. These results served as a red flag, prompting Elvia to seek further examination to understand the underlying cause of the lesion and determine the best course of action.

Addressing HPV in Women

HPV in women is one of the most common causes of abnormal cervical cells. While many types of HPV resolve on their own, some strains can lead to more severe conditions, including cervical cancer. For Elvia, the doctor recommended a colposcopy and biopsy to determine whether the HPV virus was present and which strain was affecting her. This additional testing is crucial for understanding the type of HPV involved, as certain strains are more aggressive and require more immediate intervention.

A Path Forward: The Role of Women’s Health Services

Elvia’s situation shows how essential women’s health services are in preventing serious health issues. Through regular screenings and follow-up care, women like Elvia can receive early diagnosis and intervention, ultimately reducing the risk of more severe conditions, such as cervical cancer. The gynecologist also recommended a Genotyping test to determine the strain of HPV present. This test helps the medical team decide whether more aggressive treatments, such as a Cervical Conization, are needed.

Cervical Conization is a procedure that removes abnormal tissue from the cervix, which is essential for preventing the development of cancer. While it comes with a cost, it’s a critical step in ensuring long-term health and well-being. After the Genotyping test results, Elvia will undergo this procedure to remove any abnormal cells and reduce her risk of cancer in the future.
