Hyperhidrosis surgery is a life-altering procedure that can drastically improve the quality of life for individuals struggling with excessive sweating. Marco, a 25-year-old from the Pichan San Gerardo community in Guano Canton, Ecuador, came to one of our Mobile Clinics for a problem with excessive sweating and was enrolled in our patient follow-up care program. Marco’s journey to treatment was not straightforward, but it highlighted the critical importance of follow-up care in ensuring a successful outcome for patients with complex health issues such as this.
Marco’s hyperhidrosis, characterized by excessive sweating in his armpits, hands, and feet, was causing significant distress in his life. Despite being a young man, he found it difficult to lead a normal life due to the discomfort and embarrassment associated with the condition. The inability to manage his excessive sweating had a substantial impact on his mental and emotional well-being.
The Road to Hyperhidrosis Surgery
Marco’s first steps toward finding relief began when he was able to meet with a doctor in a MEDLIFE mobile clinic. During the clinic visit, he was diagnosed with hyperhidrosis and referred for further evaluation. After consulting with the cardiothoracic specialist at the General Teaching Hospital of Riobamba, Marco was informed that he would need surgery to alleviate the symptoms of his condition.
Hyperhidrosis surgery involves the removal or interruption of the sympathetic nerves responsible for excessive sweating. This procedure can be transformative for patients, allowing them to regain control over their bodies and improve their self-esteem. However, before the surgery, Marco had to undergo thorough evaluations, including a consultation with an endocrinologist to ensure that no underlying issues within the glands of the endocrine system were contributing to his condition.
Additionally, the anesthesiologist informed our staff that a specific tube, the “double lumen left endobronchial tube,” must be purchased for the surgery. The cost of the tube is approximately $400, and since it is not available in Riobamba, it must be sourced in Quito, Cuenca, or Guayaquil. Luckily, through the support of our monthly donors, we will be able to acquire this tube for the surgery.
Assisting Marco before and after surgery
After being diagnosed, Marco received continuous medical attention, including regular check-ups and tests to ensure that his condition was being properly managed. Once the endocrine system issues were ruled out, Marco was cleared for surgery, and the procedure was scheduled.
Surgery, however, is only one part of the treatment process. Follow-up care is essential in ensuring that the patient’s recovery goes smoothly and that any complications are addressed early. After his hyperhidrosis surgery, Marco will have to undergo additional visits to monitor his recovery and make sure the surgery was successful. His follow-up care will include medical exams, counselling, and a focus on managing any post-surgery discomfort.
A Bright Future After Surgery
On Friday, September 26, at 7:00 AM, Marco will undergo his hyperhidrosis surgery at the General Teaching Hospital of Riobamba, and if all goes well, he will be discharged on Sunday.
