Themes Discussed

During the workshop, participants will engage in thought-provoking discussions led by experienced MEDLIFE staff. Some of the key topics include:

Influence
Communication
Developing leadership skills
Qualities of effective leadership
Personal reflections on leadership

Through roundtable discussions, participants will reflect on these themes, exchange perspectives, and gain insights from their peers. Leadership training programs like the GPL are an excellent environment for students looking to refine their leadership skills and emotional intelligence, practice public speaking, discuss new ideas, and build confidence as future leaders.

Leadership Skills and Emotional Intelligence

Effective leadership goes beyond simply giving instructions. It requires self-awareness, empathy, and strong interpersonal skills. MEDLIFE’s GPL workshop emphasizes the connection between leadership skills and emotional intelligence, helping students understand how emotional awareness plays a crucial role in leading others. One of the lessons we try to share with our Service Learning Trip participants is empathy and understanding when working with underserved communities. Many of the lessons in the GPL harken back to this philosophy behind helping others, and how emotional intelligence plays a role in being an effective leader. By fostering collaboration and encouraging thoughtful discussions, participants learn to navigate leadership challenges with confidence and sensitivity.

How to Develop Leadership Skills

For high school students wondering how to develop leadership skills, participation in structured programs like the GPL is an excellent start. The workshop introduces essential leadership principles and provides real-world applications, allowing students to practice leadership in action. Additionally, engaging with peers and mentors in a supportive environment encourages belief in themselves and enhances problem-solving abilities.
