The Culture and Importance of Tanzanian Women

Tanzanian women play a vital role in shaping the culture, communities, and economy of this vibrant East African nation. From their contributions to agriculture and entrepreneurship to their leadership in families and communities, Tanzanian women are vital to the country’s growth and development. While Tanzania is one of the safest countries in Africa, many women and girls still face significant challenges related to education, healthcare, and economic opportunity. Volunteering with MEDLIFE in Tanzania is an opportunity to support these women and their communities, leaving an impact that will last long after you have left.

The Role of Tanzanian Women in Society

Women in Tanzania are often the backbone of their communities. Approximately 80% of the country’s agricultural workforce is female, making women critical to food production and household sustenance. Many women also lead small businesses, particularly in rural areas, where entrepreneurship is a key source of income.

Culturally, Tanzania is home to more than 120 ethnic groups, each with unique traditions and practices. Despite this diversity, women across Tanzania face a myriad of common challenges, including limited access to education and healthcare. Empowering Tanzanian women is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring healthier, more equitable communities. Which is why so much of our work focuses on educational resources alongside healthcare outreach.

Tanzania: One of the Safest Countries in Africa

Known for its warm hospitality and stable political climate, Tanzania is often regarded as one of the safest countries in Africa. This reputation makes it an ideal destination for volunteers looking to make a difference while experiencing the country’s culture, nature and wildlife. Volunteers in Tanzania get to work closely within local communities, gaining first-hand insights into the lives of Tanzanian women and the challenges they face.

MEDLIFE’s Service Learning Trips focus on addressing health inequities and supporting women through sustainable development projects. From mobile clinics to educational workshops, volunteers have the chance to contribute to long-term solutions that benefit women and their families.

Challenges

Tanzania is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Africa, however it is important to note that many women and children face significant challenges and barriers even today.

Significant progress has been made in recent years. The Tanzanian government has implemented policies aimed at promoting gender equality. The fact still remains that much of the legal and regulatory framework still needs to be worked on to align with these initiatives.

There are also still very notable every day barriers that women and girls face, especially in rural communities. Girls often are significantly less educated than boys. While gender equality has been achieved at the primary school level, many girls face challenges when transitioning to secondary education. Factors such as menstrual health issues and early pregnancy often cause them to fall behind. As a result, women frequently enter the workforce with fewer opportunities and lower wages.

Gaining access to property ownership is also a notable challenge for women. With lower levels of education and fewer opportunities, women often manage smaller plots of land, own less livestock, and earn lower incomes.  Additionally, many financial providers do not prioritize women as a key target group, limiting their access to financial services.
