Life Changing Experiences: Framing the Value of MEDLIFE Service Learning Trips

Life changing experiences don’t always come from the big moments we expect, they often arise from the small, seemingly ordinary moments where we step outside our comfort zone and learn something new, either about ourselves or someone else. For volunteers participating in MEDLIFE Service Learning Trips, these moments happen when they step into communities in Latin America or Africa, listen to local voices, and contribute to projects that truly make an impact on people’s lives. But these trips don’t just change the communities; they change the students who participate in them, reshaping their understanding of poverty, healthcare, and their own ability to make a difference.

Our founder and CEO, Nick Ellis, has written a small statement to reiterate this. A lot of people wonder about the intrinsic value of a MEDLIFE Service Learning Trip and how it can be a truly life changing experience. Keep reading to hear directly from the founder of our organization:

“Many students come on a MEDLIFE Service Learning Trip hoping to “make an impact.” They want to serve, to help, to give — and they do. But often, after four days of supporting mobile clinics and infrastructure projects, they reflect honestly: “I didn’t do that much.”

And yet — almost unanimously — they describe the experience as transformative.

That’s because the true value of a MEDLIFE Service Learning Trip isn’t simply what students give. It’s also what they receive: an immersive, deeply educational experience that reshapes how they see the world, poverty, gratitude, community — and their own potential to make change.

This is not charity. This is not mission tourism. This is not “saving” anyone. This is learning — learning by doing, by seeing, by listening, and by reflecting.

life changing experiences

Most students have never taken a full week of their lives to focus on poverty, on health inequity, their role in global systems of power and privilege, or on what it means to live in solidarity. Most have never stood beside a local doctor in a rural community, spoken with a family who has no land title or running water, or been invited into a home built on the edge of a cliff.

And most have never asked themselves: How do I want to live a life of meaning and impact?

MEDLIFE offers students a rare, structured space to do exactly that — alongside local professionals who are doing real work, with peers who share a drive to serve, and through guided reflections led by people who’ve been engaged in this work for years. It’s a retreat, not in the sense of escape, but in the sense of intention: stepping outside your usual surroundings to confront difficult truths and emerge changed.

Students learn that “making a difference” isn’t reserved for doctors or CEOs. They realize that service isn’t about having all the answers, but about showing up with humility, learning from others, and building the mindset and muscles to create change — now and in the future.

They begin to see that poverty and hardship do not erase dignity, gratitude, or joy. That community — real, resilient, interdependent community — is often most vibrant in the places with the least material wealth. And that perhaps, poverty doesn’t destroy community, but sometimes reveals its strength.

This is not just volunteering. This is not just education. This is experiential, values-driven, life-shaping learning.”

.

In essence, our Service Learning Projects are not just about gaining volunteer hours and providing quick fixes. They are life changing experiences that offers students a rare opportunity to see the world from a new perspective. Through guided reflections and close-knit collaborations with local communities, students learn how to lead their lives through the lens of empathy and service, how to embrace humility, and how to develop the mindset needed to create lasting change.
