Why We Focus on Bathroom Projects in Medically Underserved Communities

In medically underserved communities, access to basic sanitation facilities is often lacking, especially in schools, which can lead to significant health issues and overall hinder the education quality of young students. At MEDLIFE, we recognize that improving sanitation is a critical step in promoting health and dignity for individuals in these communities. By focusing on bathroom projects, we aim to address these pressing needs while fostering international skills development for our volunteers as well as community empowerment for our partner communities.

the Health risks

Imagine this, you are a child who attends a small school in a rural community in Ecuador. While sitting in class, you realize you need to use the restroom. However, your school doesn’t have one just down the hall with several stalls and sinks like any other school. Instead, you have to go outside and use one of two broken toilets completely exposed to the elements. There is no sink to wash your hands nor any toilet paper. All while you are doing this you are missing valuable class time. A few days later you fall ill because of the bacteria you were exposed to while using the toilet and from not washing your hands, and have to miss even more school because of that, ultimately affecting your education and overall health.

By implementing bathroom projects into our Service Learning Trips, we not only improve living conditions for the community, but also contribute to long-term health benefits. Proper sanitation helps reduce the spread of diseases, allowing communities to thrive.

International Skills Development Through Volunteering

In addition to addressing sanitation needs, MEDLIFE’s bathroom projects provide valuable opportunities for international skills development. Volunteers from various backgrounds come together to participate in these community service projects, gaining hands-on experience while making a positive impact.

Through these initiatives, participants learn essential skills such as construction, plumbing, and project management. This not only benefits the communities in which we work but also equips volunteers with valuable experiences that enhance their personal and professional growth. Through this type of skills development, we empower volunteers to take on leadership roles within their communities and possibly pursue careers related to sanitation services and community planning.

Engagement and Empowerment In Medically Underserved Communities

A significant aspect of our approach is engaging with local communities throughout the project process. When working in medically underserved communities, it is vital to involve residents in the planning and execution of projects. This collaborative approach ensures that the solutions we implement are culturally relevant and meet the specific needs of the community.

By involving community members, a sense of ownership and pride is able to be implemented within the projects. This empowerment encourages individuals to take responsibility for maintaining the facilities, leading to a sustainable impact long after our work is completed. For instance, local residents may be trained in basic maintenance and hygiene practices, ensuring that the newly constructed bathrooms remain in good condition.

Focusing on bathroom projects in medically underserved communities across Latin America and Africa is essential for promoting health, dignity, and sustainability in low-income communities. By addressing sanitation needs, fostering international skills development, and engaging with local communities, we aim to create lasting positive change.
