On Monday, July 3rd, 2017, MEDLIFE Staff inaugurated a transformative water project in the communities of 15A1 and 15C in Villa Maria del Triunfo. This initiative stemmed from a crucial observation made during a previous engagement with the community.
Collaborative Efforts
In June, volunteers participating in a Lima Mobile Clinic project. In 15C heard firsthand from community members about the pressing need for a solution to pump water from the bottom of the hill to the top. Motivated by this plea, volunteers advocated for their participation fees to fund this essential water project.
Community Partnership
Recognizing the urgency, MEDLIFE swiftly initiated a community agreement with both 15A1 and 15C. This agreement outlined MEDLIFE’s commitment to providing materials for the pump-system, fostering a collaborative spirit among community members.
Transformative Impact
With collective effort, the communities rallied to set up the new water system. This endeavor promises to significantly enhance residents’ quality of life. It will be alleviating the burdensome task of manually transporting heavy buckets of water up steep steps multiple times a week.
Empowering Change
The completion of this water project signifies more than just access to clean water. It symbolizes empowerment and resilience within the community. By addressing a fundamental need, MEDLIFE empowers individuals to lead healthier, more dignified lives, laying the foundation for sustainable progress.
As MEDLIFE continues its mission to empower underserved communities, the inauguration of the water project in 15A1 and 15C stands as a testament to the organization’s unwavering dedication to transformative change. Through collaborative partnerships and community-driven initiatives, MEDLIFE remains committed to fostering sustainable solutions that uplift and empower communities worldwide.
Using a series of hoses, the new pump system will carry water from the bottom of the hill to the very top.
The system consists of multiple smaller pumps like the one pictured above.
Community members check the system at the halfway point to make sure everything is functioning properly.
MEDLIFE Interns and community members of 15C work to connect the new pump system to the water tanks at the top of the hill.
From the storage tanks at the top of the hill, the water then relies on gravity in order to be distributed to the houses below.
Each tank holds 1100L of water, and they will need to be refilled every 3 or 4 days.
Aidan Wells, one of the 2017 MEDLIFE Interns, checks the water tanks to make sure they work.
Finally, with the traditional bottle smash, the project is officially inaugurated!
