During a memorable volunteer trip to Lima, Peru, from July 19 to July 27, 2017, students from high schools across the USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico dedicated their time to a specialized service-learning endeavor.
Immersive Service-Learning
Throughout the week, they engaged in various activities, including working on mobile clinics and community development projects. Consequently, this experience provided them with hands-on learning opportunities and immersed them in the culture and challenges faced by communities in Peru.
Engaging Discussions
Additionally, the volunteers participated in discussions led by MEDLIFE interns and staff. These discussions covered topics such as global medicine, development, and education. Consequently, the students gained a deeper understanding of MEDLIFE’s mission and the broader issues affecting healthcare and development in underserved communities.
Impactful Encounters
One highlight of the trip was the opportunity to interact with individuals like Rosa Morocho, a patient in need of a new home for herself and her daughter. Visiting follow-up patients like Rosa provided the volunteers with a firsthand look at the impact of their efforts and the real-world challenges faced by those they were helping.
Community Collaboration
Transitioning to community engagement, volunteers gathered for a night meeting attended by over 300 members from 15 different communities. The meeting focused on a new development initiative poised to benefit over 1,000 people. Consequently, representatives from local municipalities were also present, signing collaboration agreements between MEDLIFE, the government, and the communities involved.
Tangible Contributions
Finally, the hard work of the high school volunteers culminated in providing much-needed medical and dental care to 60 individuals. This included adults and children, through the mobile clinics. Additionally, they conducted educational sessions, teaching 125 children proper dental hygiene practices. A small but impactful contribution to the long-term health and well-being of these communities.
